Music is often used in yoga and in sports in general to accompany one’s practice and increase motivation, stamina and well-being. Music has a positive emotional effect on the listener and can help us to make the practice more varied and colorful. The type of music that we like in a situation depends on our type, our inclinations and our inner state.
In order for the music to capture and carry us along, it should fit our current state. When we are depressed, joyful and pompous sounds are of little help at first to cheer us up. Nevertheless, our inner self can be influenced enormously through the use of the right music. This does not work from one minute to the next, but gradually and step by step.
Body and mind respond to yoga and music in their own ways. It is possible to optimally combined the positive effects of both so that they reinforce and support each other. Music can help with relaxation, concentration, breathing and balance. Furthermore, music has been proven to relieve tension, reduce stress and create inner balance. This can immensely benefit your yoga practice, if you make the right choices in the selection of you yoga music.
Music for a yoga session can of course be selected according to individual taste. Here are some important tips for choosing a playlist:
1. To ensure optimal synergy between music and yoga, the dynamics of the music should reflect the vibe of the respective yoga session. Choose calm music for a quiet session, for example, at night after a long day at work. Dynamic music is suitable for a more athletically challenging session that really elevates your heart rate.
2. A typical yoga class starts with calm, easy-going warm-up, breathing or meditation exercise. More quiet music fits here, allowing you to find a common rhythm with the sounds and let go of your thoughts of the day.
3. The middle part of a yoga class is usually more dynamic and the physically most challenging section. Here, uplifting and inspiring music fits well to support and motivate you during your practice.
4. At the end of the session, music can support you to come into a state of deep relaxation. Such a state is typically more easily achieved after an intense work-out. Obviously, calm and relaxing music is suitable here to support you in letting go and becoming aware of the sensations in your body and mind.
Yoga with Swara Imagined
The harmonies, dynamics and rhythm of the music, which we compose for our yoga videos is optimally tailored to the respective section of the yoga session. We start our sessions with a calm warm-up to activate the joints and muscles and to prepare your mind and body for the upcoming session. Afterwards, the music becomes more dynamic and powerful. This again matches the more challenging yoga sequences of the middle section of the class. You’re guaranteed to work up a sweat here! However, the appropriate music ensures that everything always happens at ease and you feel carried along to the music. Towards the end, the exercises and the music slow down. Relaxing, harmonious music supports you in finding into your relaxation and letting go. A period of absolute silence, in which you can deeply tune into yourself, is provided during the Savasana final relaxation. Namaste!
